RACISM

We look for equality

Racism, according to Oxford Dictionaries, is a prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.

This dilemma is more and more presented on social networks like ‘jokes’ or different images that want to make the viewer enjoy them. Many people of our society do not realize the real consequences of this issue and they think that laughing about  those types of jokes is not racism. As soon as you like a racist joke, you are contributing to spread this antisocial mentality.

Experiment

We have presented an anonymous experiment about a racist joke to boys and girls of 1st and 2nd ESO (12, 13 and 14 years old)

This is the survey:

-Why do poor people from Africa not see ‘The Simpsons'?

- Because they emit it at lunch time.

Does this joke make you laugh?

YES

NO

DEFINE WHAT DO YOU THINK RACISM IS

The results have been the following:

28,35% have voted YES and 71,65% have voted NO.

There have been different types of answers. The majority of the teenagers have described racism as it is, a discrimination, criticism, theft of dignity, lack of respect or social exclusion to people from another races. There have been a few girls or boys that have written they don’t know what racism is or maybe they don’t remember its significance. Something that has surprised us is that many people have written that it is an underestimate to black people. We want to aclare that racism not only attack

those people, racism is also present between people of the same skin colour, but it can also attack to people and without regard of their skin tone (like Nazism). Religion, ideas, politics and opinions, are also factors which determine racism.

What’s more, we have noticed that those teenagers that have voted YES in the survey, the have described racism almost perfectly. As we had said before, there are many people that don’t think laughing about those types of ‘jokes’ is racism, and they are completely wrong. They are providing power to this social problem without been aware.

One aspect that has been clearly mentioned is that racism shouldn’t exist because all humans deserve the same respect and the humans rights.

Finally, we would like to conclude that we know that the majority of the young people have a good idea of what racism is and many of them don’t present racist aspects like  laughing about that joke. We also realize that there are people that don’t think like that, and we all should know that the world needs our help and effort to change those mentalities. We are all the same. To finish with with the racial discrimination the education is one of the first aspects that must change. We have to remodel our values, ideas, behaviour and attitude and transmit them to the following generations, as quickly as racism as been passed on during the times.

We have found this video which is about a racist case on social media:
