HOMOPHOBIA

We look for equality

“Fear of or hatred towards homosexuals and homosexuality” is the definition that The WordReference.com online dictionary gives to homophobia.

Fear: This means that people who attack gays, lesbians, transexuals and bisexuals, have a distressing feeling of danger, evil … towards them.

Hatred: This stands for a extreme hostility, a feeling of resentment.

Why does people have these feelings about them? There are lots of factors that make this reaction in people: psychological disorders, cultural and natural anomalies, religious factors…  People who also are insecure about themselves tend to criticise people who don’t follow their pattern, this people don’t discriminate only LGBT but also any person who is different.

Through all human history there have been homosexuals, it is something normal. The problem is that society has always been inflexible when talking about minorities. Our first reaction to change is negative, it is something new that might be worst than what we already had, as it’s colloquially said “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t”.

As the time has passed, society has progressed and become, in some way, more tolerant. People are little by little becoming aware about all the unfairnesses, discriminations… But this isn’t enough, nowadays the levels of homophobia are very high.

This attacks are common face to face but now, social media mean one more problem because on the internet everyone is unknown, nameless, so people tend to lose their embarrassment. People start to say things that they wouldn’t say if they were talking directly. This means that people actually change their personality, they are complete strangers.

We have interviewed a teen boy who is gay to ask him questions about people's respect to him.
